    Situation Overview

    • As of April 1, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported that 422 cases of measles have been identified in Texas – with 42 of those patients requiring hospitalization.
      • There has been one fatality of an unvaccinated child who had measles.
      • 280 confirmed cases of measles have come from Gaines County, Texas.
    • As of April 1, the New Mexico Department of Health reported that 48 cases of measles have been identified in New Mexico – with two patients being hospitalized.
      • There has been one fatality of an unvaccinated adult who tested positive for measles.
      • 33 patients were not vaccinated.
      • 25 patients were over the age of 18.
    • As of March 26, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported that 23 cases of measles have been reported.
      • None of the individuals were hospitalized.
      • 20 of the 23 cases of measles were individuals who had not been vaccinated.
    • Due to the highly contagious nature of measles, the CDC expects the outbreak to spread and potentially worsen with the upcoming spring and summer travel season.
      • On March 31, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed the state’s first measles case since 2023. The individual was unvaccinated and had recently traveled to an area of Mexico experiencing a measles outbreak.

Potential Healthcare and Supply Chain Impacts

    • As of April 1, the New Mexico Department of Health has listed out public health offices and vaccination clinics that offer daily walk-in MMR vaccinations across the state. Find the list of offices and clinics here.
      • Additionally, the NMDOH Helpline (1-833-796-8773) can help individuals find local pharmacies with the MMR vaccine in stock.
    • After the Ohio Department of Health confirmed a measles outbreak in Ohio, the Health Director released a statement, on March 25, urging parents to ensure children are vaccinated against measles.
    • The CDC issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory that offered guidance for prevention and monitoring against the measles outbreak. It included recommendations for healthcare professionals, state and local health departments, and domestic travelers to outbreak areas.
      • More information on the measles outbreak and specific recommendations can be found here.
    • If the measles outbreak starts to expand and get worse, there is a potential for increased hospitalizations, vaccine demand spikes, and delays of non-measles care if there is a need to shift focus in hospitals and with resources.
    • States should continue to monitor this situation as measles can spread very rapidly. They should monitor and forecast supply needs, strengthen and highlight vaccination distribution plans, and enhance infection control protocols for hospital workers and at-risk populations.
