    Situation Overview

    • The World Health Organization (WHO) has extended its alert that mpox is a public health emergency of international concern. The WHO has declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern twice before; once in 2022 and again in 2024.
      • The outbreak is now affecting 25 countries across Africa with recent outbreaks in West Africa.
      • Sierra Leone has experienced near-exponential growth in mpox clade IIb cases and a new variant called G.1. As of June 6, there have been 11 deaths and more than 2,000 cases reported.
        • There have been five patients in the US (in Massachusetts, Illinois, and California) that were detected to have the G.1 variant.
      • The WHO issued a revised set of temporary recommendations to countries experiencing the transmission of mpox.
    • The CDC has stated that the risk to the overall US population remains low.

    Potential Healthcare Impacts

    • The WHO issued a revised set of temporary recommendations to countries experiencing the transmission of mpox, which includes: emergency coordination, collaborative surveillance, safe and scalable clinical care, vaccination, reporting quarterly to WHO, and addressing any research gaps.
    • The CDC has recommended vaccinations for people traveling to and from countries with clade I outbreaks. This includes Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
