    Situation Overview

    • On January 6, the Louisiana Department of Health reported that the state’s first human case of H5N1 has resulted in a death. No additional cases or evidence of person-to-person transmission has been found and public health officials continue to state that the public health risk remains low.
      • The patient was 65 years old and had underlying health conditions.
      • The patient contracted the virus after exposure to a backyard flock and wild birds.
    • As of January 7, there are now 66 confirmed human cases over the last year across 10 different states in the US. Nearly all the cases are from three states:
      • California – 37 cases
      • Washington – 11 cases
      • Colorado – 10 cases
    • With the confluence of seasonal flu, RSV, and COVID-19, public health officials are urging people to get their seasonal influenza shot which can reduce the possible risk of coinfection.

    Impacts to Healthcare

    • As of January 3, HHS has awarded $183 million in additional funding for regional, state, and local preparedness programs to continue critical activities within the H5N1 response such as disease surveillance, laboratory testing, and monitoring efforts.
      • The CDC has awarded $111 million in funding for additional enhancements to their ability to monitor H5N1 at the local, state, and national levels.
    • On December 4, 2024, the Pediatric Pandemic Network (PPN) released an updated set of clinical guidance for pediatricians. That clinical information can be found here.
