Situation Overview
As of February 27, there have been 164 measles cases reported this year across 9 states: Alaska, California, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, and Texas.
There has been one fatality of an unvaccinated child who had measles.
Most measles cases in Texas are impacting children between the ages of 0-17 years old.
50% of people who have confirmed cases of measles in Texas have not been vaccinated while the other half either have an unknown vaccination status or have been vaccinated with at least one dose.
CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officers were sent to Texas to provide support to local health officials over the next few weeks. Their goal is to engage with communities to understand concerns, provide culturally competent education, and make vaccines readily available for those who want them.
Potential Healthcare and Supply Chain Impacts
If the measles outbreak worsens and spreads further, it could lead to a rise in hospitalizations, surging vaccine demand, and potential delays in non-measles care due to hospitals and resources needing to shift focus.
Additionally, these potential impacts could strain the supply chain. A surge in vaccine demand may create production bottlenecks, while the need for PPE and infection control supplies could sharply increase. If a measles outbreak spreads internationally, it could also lead to production delays for prescriptions and other medical supplies.
States should continue to monitor this situation as measles can spread very rapidly. They should monitor and forecast supply needs, strengthen and highlight vaccination distribution plans, and enhance infection control protocols for hospital workers and at-risk populations.
